What is naturalization?

Naturalization is the process by which you become a U.S. Citizen. You must file an application with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) to begin the naturalization process via Form N-400. In addition to the application, there are a number of requirements for obtaining citizenship:

  • A background check — Candidates for naturalization must undergo a background check, including a search of administrative or criminal records. This includes fingerprinting. Under certain circumstances, however, you may have the fingerprinting requirement waived. Our attorney can tell you more about the background check process.
  • In-person interviews — Candidates are also required to undergo one or more interviews with USCIS officials. Questions involve your eligibility for citizenship and other basic criteria. The interview is conducted under oath, and you are allowed to use an interpreter if necessary. You may also have your attorney present if you desire.
  • A written test — Candidates are subject to a written test that covers a number of subjects, including basic civics knowledge and some English language skills. You are permitted to re-take the test if necessary. Our firm provides study materials.
  • The oath of citizenship — Candidates must swear allegiance to the United States at a special ceremony for new citizens usually held at a federal courthouse in your area. Once the oath is completed, you are a U.S. citizen and receive a certificate of citizenship.

There are many other necessary requirements that you must fulfill to become a citizen. If you are a member of the military, you may be eligible for an expedited form of naturalization. A skilled immigration lawyer can simplify the process for you.

Citizenship gives you protection under the law

There are many advantages to completing the naturalization process. Someone with citizenship has all the rights and protections guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and American law. Benefits include:
